Deep River is Called Deep because the banks are deep, not the water. It meanders through a still undeveloped area of central North Carolina, so you don't hear cars or see much of anything manmade but ancient ruins of the coal and iron ore mining industry that once defined the area. Now all that remains is the wildlife, bass, bream, needlenose gar, herons, and kingfishers, and some say there's another that roams these woods around it. For decades sightings of a large lumbering furry creature have kept things interesting, ears alert, and eyes always on the lookout.  For me, it's another reason to find this homeland river special.
